Fred and Rose West – between them killed 12 women and young girls in Gloucester between 1968 and 1987. He hanged himself in HMP Winson Green while on remand on New Year’s Day 1995. She was jailed for life x 10 in Nov 1995.
Marc Dutroux – killed Julie Lejeune, 8; Melissa Russo, 8; Eefje Lambrecks, 19 and An Marchal, 17, in Sars-la-Buissiere, Charleroi, Belgium. He is also thought to have killed accomplice Bernard Weinstein, 29. He was jailed for life in 2004. His wife Michel Lelievre was jailed for 25 years. She knew he had abducted Eefje and An but let them starve to death in his dungeon. Jean-Michel Nihoul, an estate agent, was jailed for 5 years for drugs offences.
Colin Ireland – killed five gay men in London in 1993. Jailed for life. Died in prison in February 2012.
Aileen Wuornos – Florida prostitute who killed seven men between 1989 and 1990. She shot them and claimed they were all in self-defence after they tried to rape her. Her lesbian lover Tyria Moore gave evidence against her in return for immunity from prosecution. Joel Rifkin – killed 17 prostitutes in 1990s – including Leah Evens, 27, Lauren Marquez, 28, in New York. Necrophiliac.
The Forest Strip Killer – Andrei Chikatilo, 56, a teacher, attacked 53 young girls and men in the Soviet Union (southern Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) between 1978 and 1990. Chikatilo, from Rostov, would gouge out eyes and cut off nipples. In May 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Chikatilo was sentenced to death. He was executed in Feb 1994. The death penalty was later abolished in Russia. In 1995 a Hollywood film, Citizen X, was made based on the killings.
Moors Murderers – Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. Murdered five children in Manchester, burying them on the moors above the city. Hindley died from respiratory failure in an NHS hospital at Bury St Edmunds whilst in custody and under the supervision of prison service staff, in 2002, aged 60, after serving 36 years in prison. Brady sought permission to be sent back to prison, claiming he is not mentally ill but was faking it. He failed. He died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, aged 79, in Ashworth High Security Hospital on Merseyside after 51 years in custody. from mainstream prison and died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease at Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside aged 79, on the15th May 2017, serving a total of 51 years’ incarceration.
Ivan Milat – killed Caroline Clarke and several other people in Australia in 1992 and 1993. Jailed for life in 1996. He died in Oct 2019.
Jack Unterweger – former “prisoner poet” – he killed 11 prostitutes in Austria, Czech Republic and USA between Sep 1990 and July 1991.http://www.biography.com/people/jack-unterweger-12103266
Dennis Nilsen – gay Scottish civil servant who murdered and dismembered 15 men at his flats in Cricklewood, north London, between 1978 and 1983 and flushed the remains down the drains. He was jailed for life in 1983 and given a whole life tariff. He died in May 2018, aged 72.
The Yorkshire Ripper – Peter Sutcliffe (pictured below). Killed 13 women between 1975 and 1980 in Bradford, Leeds, Halifax and Manchester. Jailed for life in 1981, he was subsequently transferred to Broadmoor. The hunt for him was distracted by Wearside Jack, a hoaxer who sent police letters and an audio tape. Wearside Jack was later revealed to be John Humble, who was jailed for 8 years in 2006 for perverting the course of justice. In 2016, having been deemed mentally fit to return to the prison system, he was transferred from Broadmoor to HMP Frankland prison in County Durham. A diabetic, he died at the University Hospital of North Durham in November 2020, aged 74, after contracting the COVID-19 virus during the pandemic.
Joseph Franklin – White supremacist who targeted black and Jewish people in a nationwide killing spree between 1977 and 1980. He was executed in Missouri in Nov 2013. He was executed for shooting dead Gerald Gordon, 42, outside a synagogue in St Louis in Oct 1977. In 1978 Franklin shot Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, leaving him partially paralysed, after seeing a picture of a mixed-race couple in one of his magazines. He was convicted of seven other racially motivated murders. He claimed to have committed 20 in total. While on Death Row he recanted his racist views, blaming them on his abusive upbringing. Flynt appealed against him being executed.
Jack The Ripper – unknown serial killer who targeted prostitutes in London’s East End in 1888.
Patrick Mackay – jailed for life in 1975 for five murders in London. A Nazi enthusiast, who drank a lot and took drugs. He is still alive but will never be released. He is now 70 years old.
The Monster of Florence (Il Mostro) – Preyed on couples in lovers’ lanes in Tuscany in 1980s, killing 16 people. Pietro Pacciani was convicted in 1994 but later freed on appeal. The case remains unsolved with numerous theories, including Satanic cults and even a suggestion that Il Mostro was also the Zodiac Killer.
Boston Strangler – Albert DeSalvo was America’s first “serial killer” of the modern era. Between June 1962 and January 1964, 13 women in the Boston area were strangled. DeSalvo was played by Tony Curtis in a Hollywood movie.
Night Stalker – Richard Ramirez committed his first murder in 1984. He sexually assaulted and stabbed to death a 79-year-old woman in her own home. In the next 12 months Ramirez murdered over a dozen people and tortured 25 people. He was caught in Los Angeles. In 1989 Richard Ramirez, then aged 29, was sentenced to death in California’s gas chamber. His remarks to this were “Big deal. Death always went with the territory. See you in Disneyland.” Ramirez died from B-cell lymphoma in June 2013, aged 53.
Hillside Strangler – Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buono killed together but that was not realised until they were arrested. On October 16th 1977, the pair, one handsome and charming, the other cunning and brutal, embarked on a chilling campaign of slaughter. Their first victim was Yolanda Washington, a black prostitute who worked the punters around Hollywood Boulevard. They would go on to kill 10 women together. Bianchi also killed two on his own. When he was arrested Bianchi pretended to have a split personality but psychiatrists saw through it. Both were jailed for life. Buono died of a heart attack in 2002.
Son of Sam – David Berkowitz shot dead six people in New York between 1976 and 1977. His first victim was Donna Lauria on 29 July 1976. After another killing in March 1977 crime reporters were informed that the same .44 calibre revolver had been responsible for the murders of Donna Lauria and Virginia Voskerichian. The New York tabloid press called him The .44 Killer but it was not a very catchy moniker. On 30 May 1977 Berkowitz sent New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin a letter in which he described himself as Son of Sam. Berkowitz was jailed for life. Berkowitz told police he had been commanded to kill by his neighbour Sam Carr, who sent messages to Berkowitz through his dog, a demon-possessed Labrador retriever named Harvey.
Jeffrey Dahmer – between 1978 and Jul 1991 – he murdered 17 men, mainly black, at his apartment in the Oxford Building, North 25th Street, Milwaukee. Whistle was blown by Tracy Edwards, who managed to escape and alert police. He was jailed for life i 1992 and murdered in prison in Nov 1994.
Peter Moore – was jailed for life at Mold CC in Nov 96 for murdering Edward Carthy, 28; Keith Rendells, 49; Harry Roberts, 56; and Tony Davies, 40. Moore was a homosexual and a sadistic Nazi who dressed in black leather. He owned a string of restored cinemas in North Wales. The judge said he was one of “one of the most dangerous men” he had dealt with.

Green River Killer – The Green River Killer strangled dozens of young women between 1982 and 1984 and his moniker derived from the river, just south of Seattle, where he dumped many of his victims. Most of them were prostitutes who worked on “the strip” close to Sea-Tac airport, which serves Seattle and nearby Tacoma. Gary Ridgway admitted 48 counts of aggravated first degree murder in 2003. Ridgway – who has said he killed 71 victims – is currently incarcerated for life in Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.

Bible John – killed Patricia Docker, 25, Jemima McDonald, 32, and Helen Puttock, 29, in 1968/9 after picking them up at the Barrowland ballroom in Glasgow.
Robert Black – van driver who killed Susan Maxwell, Caroline Hogg and Sarah Harper in Scotland and northern England in the 1980s. Probably also killed Genette Tate in Devon. Was given a whole life term but died in prison in 2016.
Unabomber – Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, 52, killed three people and injured 23 during a letter bomb campaign in the US. The deceased were Thomas J Mosser, 50, a senior advertising executive, was decapitated by a bomb which exploded at his home in New Jersey; Gilbert P. Murray, timber industry lobbyist in California; and Hugh Scrutton, computer store owner in California. Kaczynski only stopped when the Los Angeles Times published his “manifesto”. His brother read it and recognised it and informed the FBI, who arrested him
Suffolk Strangler – Steve Wright strangled five prostitutes in Ipswich over a short period in 2006. Convicted of all five murders in Feb 2008 and jailed for life, with a whole life tariff. He was married but his wife worked night shifts. It is thought he may have killed before, while living in Norwich.
Nine people were murdered between Aug and Oct 2017. Takahiro Shiraishi, aka The Twitter Killer, was sentenced to death in 2020. Shiraishi, 30, pleaded guilty and said he would not appeal his death sentence. Police arrested Shiraishi in October 2017 after finding the bodies of eight females and one male in cold-storage cases in his apartment in Zama, Tokyo. He admitted he had approached all of the victims on Twitter after they had talked about feeling suicidal. His Twitter profile was The Hangman. The victims were Hitomi Fujima, 26, Akari Suda, 17, Aiko Tamura, 23, Kureha Ishihara, 15, Mizuki Miura, 21, Natsumi Kubo, 17, Hinako Sarashina, 19, Kazumi Maruyama, 25, and Shogo Nishinaka, 20.
The Washington Sniper – Between 2 Oct and 22 Oct Linda Franklin; Kenneth Bridges; Lori Lewis-Rivera, 25; James Martin, 55; Pascal Charlot, 72; James “Sonny” Buchanan, 39; Prenkumar Walekar, 54 and Sarah Ramos, 34 – were all shot by a sniper in Montgomery County, Maryland (suburbs of Washington DC). John Allen Muhammad, 41, a former soldier, was sentenced to death in 2003 and executed in Nov 2009. His accomplice, Lee Malvo, 17, from Jamaica, was jailed for life with no parole. They had operated out of a car with a special sniper’s hole drilled into the boot.
In 2019 it was revealed that Samuel Little, 78, had confessed to 93 murders. FBI crime analysts believe all of his confessions are credible. Law enforcement has been able to verify 50 confessions, with many more pending final confirmation. Little says he strangled his 93 victims between 1970 and 2005. Many of his victims’ deaths, however, were originally ruled overdoses or attributed to accidental or undetermined causes. Some bodies were never found. Serial killer Anthony Sowell, 50, a former US Marine, was given the death penalty in July 2011. The bodies of 11 women were found buried beneath his house in Cleveland, Ohio. Among the dead – who were mainly prostitutes and drug addicts – were Tonia Carmichael, 53, Telacia Fortson, 31, Crystal Dozier, 38, and Amy Hunter, 47.
Mikhail Popkov, aka The Werewolf, a Russian policeman who raped and killed women after offering them late-night rides in Irkutsk was found guilty of 56 murders between 1992 and 2007, sentencing him to a second life term. He was already in prison after being convicted of killing 22 women in 2015. Popkov offered rides, sometimes in his police car, while off-duty around his city of Angarsk near Irkutsk, 4,200 kilometres (2,600 miles) east of Moscow. His murderous spree initially went unnoticed during a period of rampant mafia killings in the crime-ridden city. He killed his victims using weapons including a hammer and an axe, then dumped their bodies in the woods, at the side of the road and in a cemetery. He was also found guilty of raping 11 of the women. Popkov described himself as a “cleaner” who was purging his home city of prostitutes but his victims included shop assistants and a school teacher. All but one were women between the ages of 16 and 40. His sole male victim was a policeman he gave a ride to late at night and killed in a forest. He will go to a jail known as The Black Dolphin.
Serial killer The Crossbow Cannibal. Stephen Griffiths, 40, was given a whole life tariff in Dec 2010 for the murder of three women in West Yorkshire. In June 2009 Sue Rushworth, 43, heroin addict and prostitute, grandmother, vanished from the red light district in Manningham, Bradford. In April 2010 Shelley Armitage, 31, a drug addict and sex worker, vanished in Allerton, Bradford. In May 2010 Suzanne Blamires, 36, a prostitute, vanished in Bradford. Her body parts were found in a river in Shipley. Footage later emerged of him firing a crossbow at her in the corridor of his block of flats as she tried to escape. At one of his court appearances Griffiths described himself as The Crossbow Cannibal. He had been doing a PhD in criminology.
A serial killer jailed for the murder of five women has been found dead in his cell after hooking up an electric current to his nipples and penis. Egidius Schiffer, dubbed the Aachen Strangler, is believed to have killed himself accidentally whilst masturbating with electric shocks at Bochum Prison in Germany. He was found dead on Sunday with a table lamp chord attached to his body parts while the other end was plugged into an electric socket. Schiffer murdered five hitchhikers between 1983 and 1990 and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Kang Ho-Sun – killed 10 women, including his wife and mother-in-law, between 2006 and 2008. Was sentenced to death in 2009 but South Korea has a moratorium on executions.

Serial killers Moninder Singh Pandhar, a businessman, and his servant, Surinder “Satish” Koli, 30, abducted, sexually abused and dismembered up to 38 children in a house in Noida, near Delhi, India over an 18 month period up until their arrest in Dec 2006. The Grim Sleeper was a serial killer who killed 10 women in Los Angeles between 1985 and 2007. In 2010 Lonnie Franklin r, 57, was arrested and awaits trial. Railway Rapists – John Duffy and David Mulcahy. Duffy and Mulcahy raped scores of women in south east England and then killed three. Duffy was given a whole life term in 1988 but his accomplice, Mulcahy, was only convicted in 2001. Duffy used to work on the railways and many of their targets were picked up near railway stations.
Levi Bellfield – murdered Milly Dowler, Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell in SW London and Surrey. He attacked them with a hammer. Amelie and Marsha were attacked after getting off buses. Bellield was given a whole life sentence in 2008. He was also convicted of the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.
Michael Lupo – killed 4 gay men after picking them up in gay bars in London. He was jailed for life in 1987 and died of AIDS in jail in 1995.

Huang Yong – This Chinese serial killer always dreamt of becoming a professional killer. Huang refitted a noodle-making machine into his own killing machine. From 2001 to 2003, he kidnapped 17 teenagers, bringing them to his home in Henan province, killing them and then running their bodies through the machine.
Hubert Geralds – murdered 10 black prostitutes/drug addicts in Englewood suburb of Chicaog. Sentenced to death in 1997.

Between Oct 2009 and November 2010 Cody Legebokoff murdered four women and girls in and around the town of Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. In Oct 2009 he killed Jill Stuchenko, 35, a mother of six. She was found dead four days later in a gravel pit. In August 2010 he killed Natasha Montgomery, 23, whose body has never been found. In September 2010 he killed Cynthia Maas, 35, who was stomped on in a park. In November 2010 he killed Loren Leslie, 15, who he had met online on the website Nexopia. She was legally blind. Legebokoff was addicted to cocaine and used sex workers to get him the drug. He left his victims beside the Highway of Tears.
Peter Dinsdale aka Bruce Lee – In 1979 he was 19 years old. A serial arsonist who set fire to houses in Hull. His victims died between 1973 and 1979 – David Brewer, 34; Christine Dixon and her sons; Katrina Fraser (a baby); Richard Ellington; Bernard Smyth, 73; 11 people at an old people’s home; Charlie Hastie, 15, and brothers Peter Hastie, 8, and Paul Hastie, 6. Their father Tommy had just come out of jail. At the funeral their mother Edie shouted: “One of you bastards did it”. He killed them because Charlie was blackmailing him over gay sex. In 1980 Dinsdale/Lee was sent to a secure mental hospital indefinitely. He is still in Rampton.
The Southside Slayer was a name given in the 1980s to a serial killer operating in Los Angeles. It later became clear there were several serial killers operating in the city at the time:
Michael Hughes, who was 55 in 2012, was sentenced to death that year for the murder of Yvonne Coleman, 15, and six other women in Los Angeles.
Chester Turner (born Nov 1966) was sentenced to death in 2007 for the murder of 10 women in Los Angeles between 1987 and 98. The victims included Regina Washington, 27, who was pregnant.

Between Dec 1976 and Jan 1977 seven women were picked up in Adelaide, Australia, strangled and dumped 80km away near the town of Truro. Chris Worrell, 23, and his lover James Miller, 38, were responsible. Worrell was killed in a car crash in Feb 1977. Miller was jailed for life in 1979 after being turned in by Worrell’s former girlfriend. The victims were Veronica Knight; Sylvia Pittman; Vickie Howell; Connie Iordanides; Julie Mykyta; Tania Kenny and Debbie Lamb. They were known as the Truro murders. Miller died of liver failure in jail in 2008.
China’s ‘Jack The Ripper’ – Eleven girls and young women killed in Baiyin, northern China. Gao Chengyong, 52, was arrested in August 2016 at a grocery store he ran with his wife. He admitted to 11 murders, which took place between 1988 and 2002. He was father of two. Mr Gao targeted young women dressed in red and followed them home, where he would rape and kill them, often cutting their throat and mutilating their bodies. His youngest victim was eight years old. Mr Gao’s first alleged killing took place in May 1988, the year his son was born. The 23-year-old woman was found in the city of Baiyin with 26 stab wounds to her body. Subsequent murders followed a similar pattern, with the killer often targeting young women who lived alone. Mr Gao also cut off parts of his victim’s reproductive organs, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.
Alfredo Galan “The Playing Card Killer”, 26, from Puertollano, was jailed for 142 years in March 2005 for killing shooting dead 6 people in Spain between January and March 2003. Galan, a former soldier who served in peacekeeping corps in Bosnia, shot airport cleaner Juan Carlos Martin, 28, at Barajas airport; Ecuadorean businessman Eduardo Salas as he walked with his girlfriend; two Romanian immigrants and two other people. He left playing cards – starting with the Ace of Cups – beside each body. He surrendered to police in July 2003.
Willem van Eijk is a Dutch serial killer known as Het Beest van Harkstede (The Beast of Harkstede). He was born in 1941 and committed murders between 1971 and his eventual arrest in 2001. He was convicted twice for a total of five murders. His first victim was 15-year-old Cora Mantel in 1971. His last victim was a 34-year-old prostitute Sasja Schenker in July 2001. Because Schenker’s clothes were found near Van Eijk’s house, he became a prime suspect and he was arrested in November 2001. He soon confessed to the murders of Michelle Fatol, Annelies Reinders, and Sasja Schenker. Police also suspected him of the murders of Shirley Hereijgers, Antoinnette Bont, and Jolanda Meijer, although the latter’s body has never been found. He was jailed for life in 2002.
Steven Grieveson, 24, unemployed catering assistant, jailed for life x 3 at Leeds CC in Feb 1996. Grieveson, from Roker Avenue, Sunderland, was a repressed homosexual who killed three boys, all pupils at Monkwearmouth School because they knew his gay secret. Thomas Kelly, 18, died in a burning house in Sunderland in Nov 1993. David Hanson, 15, and David Grieff, 15, died in a burning allotment shed in Sunderland. The judge said he was “plainly evil and dangerous” and gave him a minimum tariff of 30 years.He is due to go on trial in October 2013 for the murder of Simon Martin, 14, who died in a derelict building in Sunderland in 1990. He has admitted manslaughter.
Nikos Metaxas,35, a captain in the army of Cyprus, was arrested in April 2019 and confessed to a string of murders of young migrant women and their children. The listed included Maricar Valtez Arquiola, 31, from the Philippines; Florentina Bunea, 36, from Romania, and Bunea’s 8-year-old daughter, Elena Natalia. Arquiola has been missing since December 2017, while the mother and daughter vanished in September 2016. The body of six-year-old Sierra Granze was found at the bottom of Lake Memi, southwest of the capital Nicosia in June 2019. In June 2019 he was given seven life sentences (all of a minimum of 25 years).
The Nasrec serial killer in South Africa (95-98) – Lazarus Mazingane, was given 17 life sentences and over 700 years imprisonment by the Johannesburg High Court in Dec 2002

Gerard Schaefer Jr, a sheriff’s deputy in Florida, is believed to have killed up to 34 victims. He was caught and convicted in 1973 for the murders of two girls. He was stabbed to death in prison in 1995. . He had been killed by fellow inmate Vincent Rivera. Rivera was convicted in 1999 of killing Schaefer and had 53 years and 10 months added to the life-plus-20 years sentence he was serving for double murder. On September 27, 1972 Schaefer abducted, tortured and murdered Susan Place, aged 17, and Georgia Jessup, 16. He buried them on Hutchinson Island.
He is also believed to have killed two 14-year-old girls named Mary Briscolina and Elsie Farmer who vanished while hitchhiking on October 23, 1972. On Jan 8, 1973 Schaefer bound, gagged, raped, hanged, then buried 19 year olds Collette Goodenough, and Barbara Ann Wilcox at the Devil’s Tree near Port St Lucie, Florida. Over the next five days after killing the girls, Schaefer returned to the scene on several occasions to have his way with the decomposing bodies. The tree is said to be owned by The Devil and all attempts to cut it down have failed. At the time of Schaefer’s death, a Fort Lauderdale homicide detective had been proposing to file charges against Schaefer for three unsolved murders to ensure he never got out of prison.
The Wemmer Pan serial killer Cedric Maake killed 27 people between 1996 and 1997 in South Africa. Jailed for 1,340 years.

The Havel Ripper – Dr Gerd Wenzinger, 54, tortured and cut up 13 prostitutes in Berlin during 1994. One of them was Dana Franzke, 23, who he filmed himself cutting up. The bodies were dumped in the River Havel. He fled to Brazil but was captured there in 1997. He hanged himself in prison there while awaiting extradition back to Germany.
Between 1986 and 1994 the Hwaseong Killer (or Korean Zodiac Killer) raped 30 women and murdered 14 in rural parts of Hwaseong, south of Seoul. The victims ranged from teenagers to old women. They investigated some 21,000 individuals and compared the fingerprints of around 20,000 more without success, and the case inspired South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s 2003 box office hit “Memories of Murder”. In 2019, using the latest forensic techniques to retrieve DNA from long-past crimes officers they identified Lee Chun-jae, 56, as a suspect in at least three of the killings. Lee is serving a life sentence for raping and murdering his sister-in-law in 1994, but denies involvement in the Hwaseong murders and the statute of limitations has expired.
Donald Leroy Evans – murdered Beatrice Routh, 10, and two prostitutes in Gulfport, Mississippi. Evans, 34, a former US marine, also confessed to 60 other murders. He was sentenced to death in 1991 but was killed by another inmate in 1999.
Beverley Allitt – children’s ward nurse at Grantham & Kesteven Hospital, Lincolnshire. She killed the following children between Feb and May 1991: Liam Taylor, 7 weeks old; Becky Phillips, 8 weeks old; Claire Peck, 15 months old; Tim Hardwick, aged 11; and 18 attempted murders (including Jonathan Hobson, 15, the son of a friend). Allitt was jailed for life in May 1993 at Nottingham CC.

Alun Kyte – jailed for murder of prostitutes Samo Paull and Tracey Turner in the Midlands. He may have killed some of the above (Midlands Ripper victims). In 2000 he was jailed for life. Kyte, a lorry driver, was 35 in 2000.
The Stocking Strangler – Carlton Gary, 67, was executed in March 2018. Gary was convicted for the 1977 deaths of 89-year-old Florence Scheible, 69-year-old Martha Thurmond and 74-year-old Kathleen Woodruff. Gary was accused of raping, beating and chocking the women, often with their own stockings. Prosecutors say Gary attacked nine elderly women in Columbus. Georgia, between September 1977 and April 1978. Most were choked with stockings, and seven of them died. Police arrested Gary six years after the last killing, in May 1984. He became a suspect when a gun stolen during a 1977 burglary in the upscale neighborhood where all but one of the victims lived was traced to him.
Laserman – John Ausonius was a Swedish sniper who targeted immigrants between 1991 and 1992. He was jailed for life and is currently in Osternaker prison. Amazingly most of his victims survived so he arguably a failed serial killer.
Serial killer Harold Shipman – killed OAPs between 1995 and 1998 as a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester.
Genene Jones (born July 1950) was a nurse in Texas who is believed to have killed up to 60 infants and children in hospitals in San Antonio. She injected them with digoxin, heparin or succinylcholine. She manifested classic Munchausen by Proxy symptoms. She was jailed for 99 years in 1985 for the murder of Chelsea McLellan, who was 15 months old. She was also convicted that year of the murder of Rolando Santos. In 2020 she pleaded guilty to killing Joshua Sawyer, who was 11 months old, as part of a plea bargain. She was jailed for life and won’t be eligible for parole until she is 87.

‘Ken and Barbie’ – between 1991 and 1992 Paul Bernardo, 31, and his wife Karla Homolka, 25, abducted, raped, videotaped and strangled Leslie Mahaffy, 14, and Kirsten French, 15, in Ontario, Canada. Bernardo also raped and murdered Homolka’s 15 year old sister Tammy. In 1995 Bernardo was jailed for life and Homolka for 12 years. She was released from prison in 2005 and vanished into obscurity.
Andras Pandy, 70, was arrested in 1997 for the murder of several people who were buried in the cellar of his home in Vandenbranden Strasse, Brussels. Flesh was found in the fridge. Pandy, a Hungarian-born Protestant pastor, was jailed for life in March 2002. He died in prison in Bruges in Dec 2013. His daughter Agnes Pandy, 39, was jailed for 21 years. He had been sexually molesting her for years. She was the one who tipped off police. The victims were Pandy’s ex-wife Ilona Sores; another ex-wife Edith Fintor; his sons Daniel and Zoltan Pandy; his stepdaughters Andrea and Tunde Fintor; and 12-year-old Adi Berta. All were dismembered and partially dissolved in the basement. One of his stepdaughters, Timea, got pregnant but fled to Canada.
The Station Strangler – 22 mixed race boys killed in Mitchell’s Plain area of Cape Town by Norman Symons, 29, a teacher. He was jailed for 35 years in June 1998 but died in jail.
19 black women were strangled in Phoenix, near Durban, South Africa. Sipho Agmatir Thwala, 30, aka The Phoenix Strangler, was jailed for 506 years in Feb 1999. All of the victims were lured to bogus jobs in the sugar cane fields and then buried in the Phoenix-Mount Edgecombe plantation near the White House shopping mall. Thwala lived in the Besters squatter camp and collected underwear as souvenirs.
Serial killer William Dathan Holbert, 30, from North Carolina, and his partner Laura Michelle Reese, 26, are accused of killing hotel owner Cheryl Lynn Hughes, from Missouri, in Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean coast of Panama in 2007. The Atteridgeville Strangler -Between 1987 and 1995 Moses Sithole, 31, former convict and youth counsellor, raped and strangled 38 women in black townships near Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa. He was shot by police and arrested. In Dec 1997 he was jailed for 2,410 years. His accomplice, David Selepe, was shot dead by police. His trial heard how he lured his victims to their deaths by promising them a job.

Sergei “The Boa” Golovkin, 35, killed 11 boys aged 10-15 in the suburbs of Moscow between 1984 and 1992. His trial heard he raped, mutilated and cannibalised them. He was sentenced to death by firing squad in Oct 1994. When the sentence was carried out in 1996, he became the last person to be executed in Russia before it was made unconstitutional.
Robert Hansen, aka The Butcher Baker, was a US serial killer who between 1971 and 1983 abducted, raped and murdered 17 women in and around Anchorage, Alaska. Hansen would abduct them and then free them in the wilderness and hunt them with a Ruger handgun and a knife. He was jailed for 461 years in 1983 and died in prison in 2014.
Between 1984 and 1985 Leonard Lake and Charles Ng abducted, tortured and buried 12 women, including Brenda O’Connor, who were kept in a shack in Wilseyville, on the Sierra Nevada in California. Lake committed suicide in 1985. Ng was sentenced to death in 1999. He is still on Death Row at San Quentin.

The Terminator – Anatoly Onoprienko – killed 52 people in an around the village of Bratkovichi in Ukraine (near Polish border) between Dec 1995 and Easter 1996, including the Novosad family. Victims were shot. Onoprienko was sentenced to death for 52 murders. His accomplice, Sergei Rogozin was jailed for 13 years.

New Orleans – 25 prostitutes, including Karen Ivester and Sharon Robinson, killed in Treme district of New Orleans. Victor Gant, 33, a black police officer, was originally suspected but charges were dropped and he was exonerated. Taxi driver Russell Ellwood was later convicted of one murder and jailed for life.
Viktor Karamakov, 30, was known as The Candyman by his neighbours because of his love of horror movies (and that one in particular). Between March and Nov 2009 he killed four women, aged between 69 and 83 in Skopje, Macedonia, and stole their jewellery. In June 2010 he was jailed for life. An accused Canadian serial killer will stand trial on January 6, 2020 for the premeditated murders of eight men with ties to Toronto’s gay village. Bruce McArthur, a 67-year-old self-employed landscaper, was charged in 2018 after coming under suspicion in a probe into missing persons. Body parts of seven of the victims were found hidden inside large planters that McArthur stored at a client’s home in midtown Toronto. The remains of an eighth victim were later discovered in a ravine behind the property.
Detective Sergeant Hank Idsinga, the lead investigator, said the forensic probe into the killings was Toronto’s largest ever. Excavations or searches were carried out at more than 75 properties in the Toronto area where McArthur had done landscaping work. Police also looked at 15 cold cases dating back to 1975 for possible links to the accused, before Idsinga concluded it was unlikely more victims would be uncovered. The victims in the case were McArthur’s former lover, two Afghan immigrants, two refugees from Sri Lanka and another from Iran, a Turkish national, and a homeless sex worker. All went missing from 2010 to 2017.
Robin Ligus, 58, was jailed for life in 2010 for murdering two men in Shropshire in October 1994 – Trevor Bradley, 53, who died in a burnt-out car at Melverley and Brian Coles, 57, who died in Whitchurch. He was acquitted of murdering Bernard Czyzewska, 36, who was found in a river in Shrewsbury. Ligus was already serving time for murder of Robert Young, 75, during a burglary in Shrewsbury. He suffered a stroke before he could come to trial, was considered unfit to plea and is now in a secure hospital.

They include Shannan Gilbert, 24, from Jersey City; Melissa Barthelemy, 24, from Erie County; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25 from Norwich, Connecticut; Megan Waterman, 25, from Portland, Maine; Amber Costello, 27, of North Babylon, New York; and Jessica Taylor, 20, who vanished in 2003. Brian James Dugan – killed three women between 1983 and 1985 in the suburbs of Chicago. He was sentenced to death for the murder of 10 year-old Jeanine Nicario until death penalty was abolished and sentenced commuted to life. Dugan claims he was sexually assaulted in 1972 by John Wayne Gacy. There is a suggestion Dugan suffered a brain abnormality which caused his crimes.

Alexander Pichushkin, born 1974, killed 61 people in Bittsa Park in Mosco. He wanted to fill all 64 spots on his chessboard. He was jailed for life in Oct 2007 for 48 murders. Dale Hausner, aka The Serial Shooter. He shot several people in and around Phoenix, Arizona, between Aug 2005 and Aug 2006. Mark Goudeau, 43, aka The Baseline Killer. He shot several people also in and and around Phoenix, Arizona, between Aug 2005 and Aug 2006. His victims included Georgia Thompson, 19; Romelia Vargas, 38; Mirna Palma-Roman, 24; Tina Washington, 39; Lilian Sanchez-Cabrera, 20; Chao Chou, 20; Kristin Gibbons and Carmen Miranda, 37. Several of the victims were raped. He killed people in the north east of the city, around Baseline Road. In Dec 2007 he was jailed for 438 years. Mohammad Adam Omar, 49, the Sana’a Ripper, was sentenced to death in Nov 2000. On 20 June 2001 he was given 80 lashes and then shot by a firing squad. He killed 16 women in Sana’a, Yemen, between 1976 and 1981 and 11 women at Khartoum University teaching hospital in Sudan, including Zeinab Saud Aziz, an Iraqi. Paul Dennis Reid, 41, aka The Fast Food Killer, killed seven people at various fast food outlets in Tennessee in the early part of 1997. He was caught in June 1997 and sentenced to death but died on Death Row in Nov 2013 while awaiting the outcome of appeals.

Between 1971 and 2003 David Maust killed 5 boys, including Michael Dennis, 13; James Raganyi, 16; and Nick James, 19. The last three were strangled or beaten over the head and buried under fresh concrete at his home in Hammond, Indiana. Maust, 49, was jailed for life in Dec 2005. He already had a conviction for murdering a 15 years old boy, Donald Jones, in Chicago in 1981 when he was 27. He is thought to have killed two other boys since 1971. He hanged himself in jail in Jan 2006.
Serial killer Yang Hinhai, 38, a drifter who was arrested on 3 Nov 2003. He was convicted of killing 65 victims – 23 of them women – in 22 separate attacks in Shandong, Henan, Hebei and Anhui provinces of China between 2000 and 2003. He raped the women and one occasion killed an entire family. He was executed in Feb 2004 after a one-hour trial. He always wore white gloves. He said he started killing after his girlfriend rejected him.

Todd Kohlhepp – arrested after a woman was found “chained like a dog” on his property in South Carolina in November 2016, confessed to seven killings. Kohlhepp told police on Saturday that he was responsible for the deaths of four people in 2003. He also showed law enforcement officers where he said he had buried two other victims on his property. Registered sex offender Kohlhepp, 45, has been charged with four counts of murder and one of kidnapping. His victims are believed to be Scott Ponder, 30, Brian Lucas, 30, Chris Sherber, 26, Beverly Guy, 52, Johnny Coxie, 29, Meagan McCraw-Coxie, 26, and Charles Carver, 32. Kala Brown, 30, the woman who was chained up, is the only survivor.
Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes, killed at least 11 people before committing suicide in his Anchorage jail cell in 2012 while awaiting a federal trial in the rape and strangulation murder of his last known victim, Samantha Koenig. The 18-year-old was abducted in February 2012 from the Anchorage coffee stand where she worked.

Keith Jesperson, aka The Happy Face Killer – his first known victim was Taunja Bennett on January 23, 1990, near Portland, Oregon. He had sex with her, then beat and strangled her to death. On 30 August 1992 he raped and strangled a woman, believed to be called Claudia, near Blythe, California. He killed a total of eight woman in Oregon, California, Nebraska, Washington, Wyoming and Florida and later confessed to killing 160 victims, but that is thought to be a lie. He was arrested in March 1995 and is serving several life sentences at Oregon State Penitentiary.
Between 1993 and 1999 serial killer Andre Crawford killed 11 women (mainly prostitutes and drug addicts) – raped, strangled, beaten and stabbed and dumped them in abandoned buildings in the South Side of Chicago. Crawford, who was 37 in 1999, was a necrophiliac. In Dec 2009 he was jailed for life without parole after two jurors refused to sign off on the death penalty. Long Zhimin – Long Zhimin, born in China’s northwestern Shaanxi province, killed 48 people from 1983 to 1985 with the help of his wife, though proceeds of property they obtained amounted to only 573 yuan. Long targeted people who were disabled or had dementia, abducting them and killing them eventually. He lived with the corpses and later buried their bodies near his house. Psychiatry tests showed that Long did not suffer from any psychotic symptoms and was considered intelligent.
Serial killer Robert Hanson, a bakery owner, killed a number of Alaskan prostitutes in 1979/80. They were abducted and then freed on the banks of the river Knik in Alaska where he hunted them and shot them. He was jailed for 499 years in 1984.
Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn aka Aem Cyanide allegedly poisoned 15 friends in Thailand. The last victim, Siriporn Kanwong died on a trip with Sararat in April 2023. Among the victims was an ex-boyfriend. Police allege she killed for financial reasons. Sararat has denied all the charges. One friend had loaned her 250,000 baht (£5,900). Relatives of other victims had also reported missing jewellery and cash. Sararat is a native of Kanchanaburi province (and people from there are known as aem). Her ex-husband Vitoon Rangsiwuthaporn was a senior policeman in Ratchaburi province.

Rocha, a security guard,targeted women, homeless people and homosexuals in the country’s central state of Goias. Rocha is understood to have demanded valuables from his victims before shooting them and leaving without the items. Serial killer Joachim Kroll, was jailed for life in 1982 for killing 14 people in the Ruhr valley area of Germany between 1955 and 1976. He was a cannibal who made casseroles out of human hands, potatoes and carrots. Police found frozen flesh in his flat and a hand in a saucepan. Peng Miaoji – Between February 1998 and March 1999, a gang led by Peng Miaoji killed 76 people and committed 38 burglaries in eastern Anhui and three other Chinese provinces. Peng was notorious for his cruelty – he would cut victims’ throats and private parts, rape them and burn their corpses to destroy evidence. Six members of the gang were sentenced to death in 1999. They were shot to death with a bullet in the back of the head. According to Chinese media, the gang carried out the crimes in 33 villages across 4 provinces, taking valuable items and cash amounting to more than 240,000 yuan.
Serial killer Volker Eckert, a German lorry driver, was jailed for life in 2006 for murdering six women, including a 14 year old girl, in Germany, Spain and France between 1974 and 2006. They were all strangled. Eckert, 47, committed suicide in his cell in Bayreuth, Germany in 2007. He may have killed up to 19 women.

Guy Georges, aka The Beast of the Bastille, 35, was jailed for life (22 years) in April 2001. Between 1991 and 1997 he raped and murdered seven women in the Bastille district of Paris. They were Agnes Nijkamp, 32, Helen Frinting, 27, Estelle Magd, 25, Pascale Escarfail, 19, Catherine Rocher, 27, Elsa Benady, 22, and Magalie Sirotti, 19. The Butcher of Mons. Surgically dissected torsos were discovered in the River Haine or elsewhere in Mons, Belgium between July 1996 and March 1997. They were Martine Bohn, 43, a retired transsexual prostitute; Jacqueline Leclerq, 33, a mother of three, and Nathalie Godart, 21. There was a suggestion that the killer may have been a Montenegrin called Smalj Tujla, but he was never charged. Unsolved.
18 homosexual men (mainly middle aged) were killed at their homes in Rome between 1990 and 1998. The killer may have been a foreign rent boy. Victims included Professor Louis Inturrisi, 56, who wrote for the New York Times, who was killed in August 1997; Count Alvise di Robilant, former managing director of Sotheby’s Italia, who was bludgeoned to death in Florence in June 1996; and Enrico Sini Luzi, 66, gentleman-in-waiting to the Pope, who was battered with an antique candelabra at home in Prati, Rome in Jan 1998.
Elfriede “Sugar” Blauensteiner, 70, aka The Black Widow, killed her husband Friedrich Doecker, 64; her neighbour Franziske Koeberl, 84; lover Alois Pichler, 77, and two other men in Vienna, Austria, between 1981 and 1995. All were poisoned with Euglucon, which fatally lowered their blood sugar levels, hence her nickname. She was jailed for life in Sep 1997. The trial heard she was addicted to gambling and killed them for insurance. She died of a brain tumour in 2003.

Serial killer in Perth, Australia, who killed three women between Jan 1996 and Mar 1997 – Jane Rimmer, 23, Ciara Glennon, 27, and Sarah Spiers, 18. They disappeared from the posh Claremont nightclub in Perth. They were dumped in the bush outside the city. The killer is believed to be a loner who washes and polishes his car every day. In December 2016 Bradley Edward, 48, from the suburb of Kewdale, was charged with the murders of Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon, and with the sexual assault of two other young women. Edwards is accused of abducting Ms Rimmer, a 23-year-old childcare worker, on 9 June, 1996, as she was on her way home from a night out with friends. He is also accused of abducting Ms Glennon, a 27-year-old lawyer, on 14 March, 1997, after she, too, had been out with friends. The investigation into the disappearance of Sara Spiers, an 18-year-old secretary, is continuing. Edwards is also charged with abducting a 17-year-old in 1995 and is facing an indecent assault charge after police say he broke into the bedroom of an 18-year-old woman while she slept and attacked her in 1988.

In Sep 2011 Li Hao, 36, was arrested in Henan, China. He had captured five women to use as sex slaves. He persuaded three of them to kill two of their fellow captives. Li Hao, had dug a dungeon underneath a basement he owned and tricked women who worked at hair salons, karaoke bars and a massage parlor into going there with him.Li repeatedly raped the women, who were held there between two and 21 months, it said. Police said he wanted to make money by forcing the women into prostitution and to appear in obscene webcasts. One of the women escaped and went to police. The two women who died were killed by three of the others on Li’s instructions, and were also found guilty of murder, which said they were shown leniency. When Li was arrested in September 2011, he was a married man with an 8-month-old son. He had built the dungeon in a residential complex away from his home, according to reports at the time.He was convicted of offences including murder, rape and illegal detention and sentenced to death in November 2012. In 2011 Jagghu Pehlwan, 28, was arrested and accused of killing 150 people between 2003 and 2011 on the outskirts of Delhi, India. His victims included a hotel owner shot in Safdarjung enclave and three political leaders shot in Ghaziabad and Noida. He was actually a contract killer, rather than a serial killer. Serial killer John Edward Robinson, 56, from Kansas City, was sentenced to death in Nov 2002. He is believed to have killed eight women between 1985 and his arrested in June 2000, including Suzette Trouten, 27, Lisa Stasi, 19, Izabela Lewicka, 21. He sold her daughter Tiffany, 4, to a couple who thought they were adopting her. The bodies were found in barrels in a trailer park in La Cygne, Kansas and a storage locker in Raymore, Missouri. He was a father of four and secret “slavemaster” who met some of the victims through S&M chatrooms.

Gholamreza Kordieh, 28, an Afghan taxi driver known as The Tehran Vampire, kidnapped, raped and murdered 11 women aged between 10 and 47 at night in Tehran, Iran. Among his victims were Parvand Parchami, 25, He was whipped by his victims’ relatives and hanged from a crane in front of a crowd of 10,000 in August 1997.
Yang Xinhai – Yang Xinhai, a Chinese serial killer from central Henan province, killed 67 people and raped 23 women between 2000 and 2003. He had earlier been sent to labour camp for theft and later jailed for rape, but a break-up with a girlfriend after he was released reportedly triggered another round of violence. Yang sometimes killed entire families and was suspected of performing acts of necrophilia. In February 2004, Yang was sentenced to death for intentional murder, intentional injury and rape.
Archibald Hall, dubbed “The Monster Butler”. He began working for Peggy Hudson as a butler at Kirtleton House in Dumfriesshire in 1975. Hall had previously been in prison and two years later a fellow inmate, David Wright, got a job as gamekeeper on the same estate. A row between the two resulted in the butler shooting and killing the other man and burying him in the estate grounds. Hall quit his job and moved to London, working for Walter and Dorothy Scott-Elliot. He hatched a plan with an accomplice, Michael Kitto, to rob his employers, but was overheard by Mrs Scott-Elliot.They suffocated the woman with a pillow and her husband was drugged, taken to Scotland, beaten and buried in woods in the Highlands. During that journey they were accompanied by the housekeeper Mary Coggle, who started to wear Mrs Scott-Elliot’s expensive clothes and jewellery. Fearing this might draw attention, Hall and Kitto killed her too, and left her body in a stream near Middlebie in Dumfries and Galloway. Her body was discovered on Christmas Day 1977 by a shepherd. An investigation was launched but, in the meantime, the pair also killed Hall’s half-brother, Donald, in Cumbria. They were eventually caught in East Lothian and Hall was convicted of four of the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. Kitto was also jailed for life.
Henry Wallace, 55 (in 2020), aka The Taco Bell Strangler, killed 11 women in Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution at Central Prison in Raleigh. He got his nickname because his victims often worked at Taco Bell.

Between 2003 and Jan 2006 – Ana Maria de los Reyes and 39 other elderly women – strangled in Mexico City. Juana Barraza, 48, a single mother and occasional woman wrestler, was jailed for 759 years in March 2008. Her wrestling name was “Lady of Silence”. It emerged at the trial that she hated her mother for abandoning her as a child.
Hua Ruijiao, 28, lorry driver – strangled 14 prostitutes in Beijing between 1998 and 2001 after having sex with them. Sentenced to death in Nov 2001.
Anatoly Kiselyov, 44, a taxi driver, killed three women and one man between 1990 and 1998 and then dumped them on the outskirts of Klaipeda, Lithuania. He robbed them of their jewellery and clothes. In Sep 1998 he was sentenced to death.
In Nov 2014 Chisako Kakehi, 67, a multi-millionaire, was arrested in Kyoto, Japan, accused of poisoning seven husbands or partners for their life insurance. Kakehi is an alleged “Black Widow” who has inherited 800 million yen (nearly £7m). Her fourth husband Isao Kakehi died in December 2013, two months after they got married. Cyanide was found in his blood. Kakehi told the Sankei newspaper: “I did not do it. Why would I do anything that would lead to my arrest over the death of my husband. I’m not that stupid.”
In Sep 2014 her 75-year-old boyfriend fell suddenly ill after the couple ate together at a restaurant and died. Her first husband passed away at the age of 54 in 1994. In 2006, her second husband, whom she had met through a dating agency, died of a stroke aged 69, while the third marriage ended in 2008 with the death of her 75-year-old partner. A boyfriend, believed to have been suffering from some form of cancer, died a year later, and in 2012 her then-fiance met his fate after collapsing while riding a motorbike.
In the summer of 2013 two bus drivers were shot dead in Ciudad Juarez, by a woman who may have been seeking revenge for sexual abuse of female passengers. She wore a blonde wig and told the second victim: “You guys think you’re real bad, don’t you?” Media outlets began receiving emails from the address “Diana the hunter of bus drivers“. She wrote: “I myself and other women have suffered in silence but we can’t stay quiet anymore. We were victims of sexual violence by the drivers on the night shift on the routes to the maquilas,” a reference to the factories near the Texas border, “I am the instrument of vengeance for several women.”
French serial killer Emile Louis – raped and murdered Madeleine Dejust; Chantal Gras; Bernadette Lemoine; Christine Marlot; Martine Renault; Jacqueline Weiss and Françoise Lemoine between 1975 and 1979 in Yonne valley, Burgundy. He was arrested in 2000 and jailed for life in 2004. He died in 2013.

Korean serial killer Yoo Young-chul, 33, murdered 21 people – mainly rich men or women working as masseuses or in hostess bars – in Seoul, South Korea. 11 bodies were found buried at a mountain temple north of the city. He ate the livers of some of his victims. All his victims were killed between Sep 2003 and July 2004. In Dec 2004 he was sentenced to death but the sentence has not yet been carried out. The Korean movie, The Chaser, is loosely based on his crimes.
Iranian serial killer Mohammed Bijeh, 24, aka the Tehran Desert Vampire, was hanged (after being flogged) in March 2005 for raping and murdering 16 boys, including Kavon Khosravi, 12, in the desert SE of Tehran, Iran between March and Sept 2004. His accomplice, Ali Baghi, was jailed for 15 years.
Shirin Gul, 39, and her lover Rahmatullah and son Samiullah, 18, murdered 27 taxi drivers, including her husband Mohammed Azam, 60. They were lured to the house in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, given kebabs laced with sedatives and then strangled. Their taxis were taken to the Pakistan border and sold. Gul was jailed for 20 years.
Serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki, 34, aka The Otaku Murderer, a printer, he murdered four girls, aged between 4 and 7, in Tokyo, Japan between 1988 and 1989. He led the family of one of the children to the remains and also took video footage of the bodies. He also drank their blood. In April 1997 he was sentenced to death by hanging. He posed as a policeman. He was hanged in 2008.

Serial killer Gianfranco Stevanin, a farm worker, (born 1960) sexually assaulted, assaulted and buried six women near Verona, Italy between 1994 and 1997. He was jailed for life in Jan 1998. Victims included Biljana Pavlovicand Claudia Pulejo, Roswita Adlassnig and Blazenca Smolijo.
Between 1986 and 1997 five people were beaten to death with an iron bar in Athens, Greece by Dimitris Vakrinos, 35, who committed suicide on May 12, 1997 while on trial. He was found hanging in the showers of the prison. He killed his victims after they mocked him for his height (he was 5 foot 4).

Alan Grimson, a gay sailor from Portsmouth, killed Nicholas Wright, 18, a naval rating, and Sion Jenkins, 20, a gay barman between 1997 and 1998. Grimson was jailed for life in March 2001.
